Graph Transformation questions

Hello all, I am trying to understand the rules for translating a graph with an absolute value. I don't get why \(\displaystyle y=\left | x+c \right |\) should shift the graph to the left. When I try to reason it out, I see that we are adding a value to x, thus making it bigger, shouldn't we be moving on the number line to the right?? I can simply memorize this one rule, but I am trying to understand it rather than simply memorize it.

Thanks in advance.

If your making the value of c bigger what must we do to the value of x to achieve the same overall value?

Unfortunately, I do not see where you are leading...

Can you elaborate?

Can anyone else shed some light on this?
