Can some explain to in simple term terms why protons need to be moving at very high speeds to collide?

on this note, why it is an advantage to collide particles with zero net momentum in a particle accelerator?
After the collision there will be a shower of particles coming out. If we had a net momentum these particles wouldn't stay in the detector area but move past it. Keeping them in the detector area gives us more particles that we can measure.
