Always glad to help someone learn to use $$\displaystyle \LaTeX$$ as it makes posts so much easier to read! Happy Latexing!

However, sometimes and seemingly arbitrarily, this makes the rest of the expression smaller too, and I can't figure out why!
To limit the scope of \small, it should be enclosed in curly brackets. For example {\small2}. Using \small{2}+x would result in the +x being small as well as the 2.

You should include how to write $\sqrt{c}$ in the first post since last night I spent one hour to figure it out how to write roots whose base number isn't 2. Thanks.

How to write a degree symbol in LaTeX without copying the symbol in this forum's banner or making o, O, 0, or \circ as an exponent?

\circ is the standard way.
